Arts and Craft Bed Build - Foot Board
Since the last post, I concentrated on the foot board portion of the bed that I am building for my daughter. The plan is pretty well made and the templates are pretty good to shape out the different components.
Few observation :
Few little errors on the version of the plan I got for some dimensions, but nothing major. Nothing better then some problem solving while building.
cutting the mortise parts for the loose tenons gets pretty interesting on long parts and balancing a router on the ends of the board, makes it interesting. Use a jig to stabilise.
From a template perspective, all the information is included in the plans. One thing that I rapidly realized was that the dimensions that I am using, mostly due to the stock that I have, differs slightly from the one in the cutting list. Not by much, but just enough that the curved portions do not terminate at the same place. Again nothing that can't be fixed.
Also, because the dimensions are for a smaller bed, some adjustments were done to the components regarding the length and shapes. But again, nothing that is really a problem.
Few challenges of the build include some length issues. I have a one car garage and shaping some parts while they are long, poses some interesting situation. Nothing serious, but some tools needed to be moved from there location temporarily to accommodate the shaping of the piece of lumber.
Shaping the parts that are curved was made easy with the additions made during christmas time of an oscillating spindle sander. Doing the cloud lifts for the rails of the foot board was pretty nice to bring to final shape. The bulk of the wood that needed to be removed was done at the band saw and final shaping was made with the sander. Pretty nice addition and very practical. Just need to practice more to cut closer to the line :-)
Final shaping has been made and final smoothing of the parts has been completed and is ready to be assembled, which is the next step for the foot board. Just before the final glue up, the hardware will be screwed up to the legs. Once all this is done, final sanding will be complete and ready for the final assembly.
