Tool vs Batteries - Upgrade dilema

Mower Story

I was never able to complete the mowing of the full lawn with the included batteries that came with the electrical mower. It came with this disclamer from multiple user comments on multiple sites offering opinion/reviews on multiple sites.

I always take these user comments with a grain of salts, not fully knowing how real the user is a user of the said mentioned product and the full extent of the experience.

I recently faced the situation where the batteries that I had, all from the same manufacturer, of varying age and use was not cutting it with the 2 sets that would normally cover me to do both the front and back yards in one single mowing session.

The main reflex was to look into the higher capacity batteries offered. The premis was that the batteries had some age and was to replace them…. with potentially something higher capacity and maybe hopefully, without changing the batteries along the way.

Until I saw the prices for a pair of batteries. Started to investigated my options and sources to acquire new. It was suggested to get the new version of the mower. With some investigation, this option started to be somewhat tempting. For a certain price difference, compared to the pair of batteries, I would get a new mower, a version 2.0 kind of upgrades. Adding on top of that, 2 x 10Ah batteries in the offer.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Long story short, took a little while to take a decision and finally decided to buy the new mower. Yes another Dewalt mower. I did read the comments and pretty much the same as the with the previous version…. The performance, well it depends. I took the most basic model. I am still able to walk and push the mower.

Well after the first cut, the first session today with the new mower, the same lawn, Oh MY ! I barely use one bar on either of the batteries.

What I really Like :

  • The side escape for the cut lawn

  • Speed variability of the motor, adapting to the load

  • the long lasting batteries, so far….

What I dislike :

  • The side escape for the cut lawn…. Made pretty cheap and holding is so so.

  • 2 of the smallest chargers.

    • Because these are pretty huge batteries, they ain’t the fastest to charge the packs.

    • May not be so much of a big deal is they last longer but

Conclusion

For a first run, as a first experience, I can only say to I am impressed. For the time being, I can’t really attribute to a single factor the results but for sure, the variable speed motor, bigger batteries, potentially different batteries technologies all contribute to the whole story.

With more experience, pretty sure I will be able to report back with the kind of results I see, again keeping the metric pretty close the same from an area to mow. Length of the grass will affect the results for sure and this is where I will see the mower shine or not….
